Dental anxiety and phobia is one of the most common fears and we understand this. Don't let your anxiety and fear prevent you from maintaining a healthy mouth and a great smile. It is our priority to help you in your dental needs. If you suffer from anxiety or dental phobia, we have some dental sedation options for you to consider:
Oral sedation involves giving you a “pill” that will help to relax and ease your nerves in the dental office. It is not meant to put you to sleep but instead we keep you conscious and try to manage your anxiety as much as we can during treatment. A comprehensive medical history needs to be taken to ensure you are a candidate for oral sedation and patients needing oral sedation will need to have a designated driver accompanying them to and from their dental appointments. Anyone taking oral sedation should not drive or operate heavy machinery for at least 24 hours after taking it.
Nitrous oxide commonly called “laughing gas” is administered through a nosepiece we place on you during your dental appointment. It is a clear, odorless gas that is meant to relax and ease your nerves and allows you to be conscious and help with anxiety during your dental appointment. A comprehensive medical history needs to be taken to ensure you are a candidate for nitrous oxide sedation. Unlike oral sedation, the effects of nitrous sedation subside as soon as the dental appointment is over and you do not need a somebody to accompany you to the appointment.
For patients where oral sedation or nitrous sedation alone may not be enough to help deal with anxiety during a dental procedure, we offer combined oral and nitrous oxide sedation. It offers a more predictable way to achieve a level of sedation where you are still conscious but relaxed enough to complete your dental treatment. As with the above options a comprehensive medical history is required to determine if this is an appropriate option for you.
