Braces and orthodontic treatment are used to correct malocclusion (teeth that are crowded or crooked).
Malocclusion can be inherited, or can develop as a consequence of environmental factors and habits. It can affect a child's growth and development affecting factors like nutrition, speech development, and self-esteem. Having orthodontic treatment not only gives you a great smile but more importantly can give you a healthy mouth.
Traditional braces involve metal brackets and wires which are changed and tightened in a series of appointments (usually one visit per month) to straighten the teeth to their desired position.
Orthodontic appliances are typically used for kids and young teens early on in cases where we anticipate and/or find problems with crowding, missing, or crooked baby or permanent teeth. If these problems are identified early enough during routine dental exams, we can use an appliance that can help fix these problems or to influence the development of the upper and lower jaws to make a child's smile and function ideal. In some cases if done early enough, we may prevent a child from ever needing braces to correct a “bad bite” or malaligned (crooked) teeth.
Invisalign braces involve having a series of custom made plastic aligners placed over your teeth which gradually straightens them. The benefit of Invisalign is that the aligners are clear and not noticeable like traditional braces. They can also be taken off to allow for brushing and flossing between the teeth. They are a great option especially for adults who prefer not to have the look of traditional braces in order to achieve a beautiful straight smile!
